Calcutta: Sourav Ganguly will formulate a detailed plan to ensure Bengal perform better at the national level.
The former India captain will submit the plan at the next meeting of the coaching committee, of which he’s the chairman, on Wednesday.
The committee met for the first time on Saturday and it was decided that Bengal coaches in Ranji Trophy and various other age-groups — Ashok Malhotra, Joydeep Mukherjee and Gautam Shome — will be called to brief the members.
Sourav laid special emphasis on discipline and fitness at the meeting. Accordingly, trainers have also been asked to be present on Wednesday.
“I will prepare a detailed report in the next few days… We’ll see how best we can implement it…
The focus is on the Ranji Trophy, Under-19 and Under-16 levels,” Sourav said after the meeting.
A pool of players — 20 batsmen, 20 pacers and 20 spinners — will be identified and monitored regularly. Sourav has suggested that a coach with international experience, if needed from outside the state, be put in charge of the pool of players.
This continuous monitoring of the supply line will help nurture talent, feel the committee members.
Discussion revolved round how Bengal’s performance in the Ranji Trophy could be improved. Sourav agreed that Bengal’s batting has been an area of concern in the last few years.
“Batting is an area of massive concern… That’s one of the reasons why we’ve been losing. It’s no rocket science. This time we’ll miss Manoj Tiwary for most of the season. That is a setback.
“I’ve spoken to the coach (Malhotra) regarding this. Players have to understand the situation and take up responsibility. We’ll have to find a way to play better,” Sourav explained. The dearth of quality spinners in the state is another factor behind the poor show. “We’ll have to find a solution,” he said.
Asked if Wriddhiman Saha could lead in all formats, Sourav said: “That’s the selectors’ call… The coaching committee doesn’t have any jurisdiction to decide on that… If someone is good in all three formats, then he’ll do it. Dhoni has excelled in all formats.”
Sourav admitted the fielding of over-aged players at the Under-14 and Under-16 levels needed to be addressed. This has been there… It’s not easy as said… We’ll try our best to see what can be done.”
CAB president Jagmohan Dalmiya, who was present at the meeting, felt the players and coaches need time to settle down.
“Our performance has been stagnant at some stages in the previous years… We’re trying to do it differently this time… Give the coaches and players time to settle down,” Dalmiya said.
Hironmoy Chatterjee, Samir Dasgupta, Debabrata Das and Rupnath Roy Chowdhury are the other members of the committee.
