Mukund Should Take Inspiration from Ganguly to Make a Comeback - WV Raman

Battling a prolonged slump, Abhinav Mukund went into the Ranji Trophy game against Saurashtra with doubts in his mind. By the end of Day Two, he had faced 433 balls, scored 240 runs and found his form.

Tamil Nadu coach WV Raman had a role to play in helping the talented opener make this turn. "He was trying too much. It happens when you're not scoring runs," Raman told The Indian Express.

Things had been going awry for Mukund after he was dropped from of the Indian team after the 2011 tour of England. After the snub, runs started to dry up on the domestic circuit as well. He did come up with a few fine knocks but Mukund had lost his prolific run-scoring streaks. Before this game, he had 102 runs in three Ranji outings.

Raman says Mukund should take inspiration from former India captain Sourav Ganguly who made a great comeback to the Indian team in 1996. "He's just 23. Sourav was left out of the Indian team for four years after 1992. Look how he came back," said Raman

" Sehwag International School " Sourav Ganguly Feels Proud of Viru

Report by India Education bureau, New Delhi: As a child, he wanted to don the India colours and wield the willow to slaughter the fearsome bowling attack anywhere in the world. But Virender Sehwag, the swashbuckling India opener, never forgot for a moment his parental advice not to ignore education.

That was easier said than done, though. The young Sehwag always found it tough shuttling between home and school, especially grappling with the sheer wastage of time while trying to balance academics with his favourite game.

True, his home and school in the 1990s weren’t far apart; both were in Najafgarh, then a dusty, underdeveloped colony in southwest Delhi. “But on crowded buses, it isn’t easy to carry your heavy cricket kit in your hand and an equally heavy school bag slung across your shoulders. The conductor needn’t be kind; you end up wasting hours in transit between school, coaching centre and home,” notes Sehwag, whose batting prowess has scripted many an international record.

“I thought of a solution to it: why not set up a world class school where education and top-rate sports facilities will blend seamlessly?’’

The result is Sehwag International School (SIS), a 23-acre multi-activity campus in Jhajjar, just south of plush Gurgaon in Haryana. Into its third year, the school is bracing up to take in no less than 150 students in the upcoming academic year.

SIS, for the record, is India’s only school to be founded by a cricketer of global repute. A co-ed, boarding-cum-day scholarship institution with 370 students, the school is the realisation of an ideal situation Sehwag had cherished during his evolving years.

Former captain Sourav Ganguly notes that it rarely happens that a successful cricketer invests in education when there are more lucrative ventures around. “I’m proud of him,” adds the southpaw.

Pics : Sourav Ganguly at CAB's Coaching Comittee Meeting - Nov 21, 2013

Calcutta: Sourav Ganguly has proposed that the CAB host an All-India invitation tournament in the lead-up to the Ranji Trophy from next year.

At the CAB coaching committee meeting on Thursday, it was also decided to pick the pool of 25 players each in different categories by January.

Sourav is the chairman of the committee. Bengal coach Ashok Malhotra and CAB president Jagmohan Dalmiya were present among others at the meeting.

The pool of players would be picked by clubbing Ranji and Under-25 players together while there would be separate pools for Under-19 and Under-16 players.

“The only concern for us is the extended monsoon in these parts.

“But Sourav is keen to have something similar on the lines of Buchi Babu meet,” a senior CAB official said.

When Sourav came Running to Meet & Greet Sachin in the Team Bus at Wankhade

They are best friends since childhood. Played a lot of cricket together for many years. They have huge respect for each other. Sachin left wankhede after being greeted by that ‘best friend’.

Everything was over. West Indies team have left the stadium. Someone from the Indian dressing room ordered MCA authorities to keep the bus ready. Team left the dressing room and boarded the bus. As soon as the bus started to roll on, sachin’s wife spotted someone coming towards the bus. She said that to sachin and then sachin asked the driver to stop the bus. It was Sourav who was rushing towards the bus to greet and congratulate sachin. Sachin came down from the bus. They hugged each other. Undoubtedly the best picture of the whole series. Actually it was only Sourav, no other former cricketer (dravid laxman etc) did that. Everyone, Starting from the team mates in the bus to the passer byes were excited and mersmerised seeing the scene. Sourav was emotional too. Regarding Sachin’s farewell, he said, " It's a Grand Farewell that is to be Remembered for a long time ".

Sonam Kapoor, Sourav Ganguly, Kajol, Waheeda Rehman, Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, Sharmila Tagore and Usha Uthup are humming a common tune — “Dil diyey mon diyey, dil diyey douroben” which is sort of a clarion call for a cause.

It’s the anthem of the Tata Medical Center Kolkata Marathon 2014 that governor M.K. Narayanan will flag off on January 5. The proceeds from the marathon, barring the registration fee, will be spent on treatment of underprivileged children suffering from cancer at Tata Medical Center.

Dada at the Announcement of Marathon at Taj Bengal on Monday evening
It’s the anthem of the Tata Medical Center Kolkata Marathon 2014 that governor M.K. Narayanan will flag off on January 5. The proceeds from the marathon, barring the registration fee, will be spent on treatment of underprivileged children suffering from cancer at Tata Medical Center.

“The whole idea behind Dil Diyey Douroben, the call of the heart, is to wipe a tear off a child’s face,” said Geeta Gopalakrishnan, the director of donor relationships at Tata Medical Center. She penned the lyrics while Uthup composed the music and sang too with a host of others.

Sourav formally announced the marathon at Taj Bengal on Monday. Gopalakrishnan, Dr Mammen Chandy, the director of Tata Medical Center, Prochy Mehta, the organising secretary of the marathon, and Farzan Heerjee, the chief of corporate relations, Tata Steel, were present on the occasion.

“Hopefully we can do enough to raise funds for the medical centre. I’ll make sure that I run and make it a memorable one. We in Calcutta need to make it a success. I am keen to make it a regular affair. May be in the future years, I can participate a bit more. We all have kids… we try to provide the best to them. We don’t realise it till you actually suffer,” Sourav said.

The former Team India captain is not a marathon novice. “I have run when I was young. Let’s see how much I can run this time,” he told Metro. “Seven to 8km… may be 10. Let’s see,” he smiled.

He exhorted Calcuttans to join the cause. “Anybody visiting that place (Tata Medical Center) will feel personally connected. I have actually seen it. A lot of us do a lot of charity without even knowing what’s happening. You should go and see it yourself… you’ll be touched. You’d also run,” he said.

Bhaichung Bhutia, Prosenjit, Rituparna Sengupta and Bickram Ghosh are expected to run alongside Sourav. But what about Sachin Tendulkar with whom Sourav had won many marathons for India on the cricket field? “Sachin will be just a phone call away!”

Now don’t get carried away and expect a Lord’s balcony shirt swirl on a hometown street. “I still have about two months to lose 10 kilos. Maybe then I can do it! I did that in 2002. I was 29 then. Now I am 40,” he laughed.

To run with the stars and for a cause, Red Road on January 5 is where you should be.

Sourav instilled discipline, confidence and commitment that you see in the present Indian team - Lara

Calcutta: While the cricketing world has been busy for more than two decades in pitting Brian Charles Lara against Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar, the charmer from Trinidad oozed respect, and only respect, for The Master, at a talk show, on Sunday evening.

Lara had been invited by the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) to watch the India-West Indies Test at the Eden. But while India wrapped up the match inside three days, Lara could arrive only on the fourth. So on Sunday, on what would have been the fifth day of the Test, Lara kept himself busy at the golf course, at Mother House and at Swami Vivekananada’s residence. He visited the Eden as well, though only for 20-odd minutes.

Lara preserved his best for the evening though. In company of former India captain Sourav Ganguly, the genius from the Caribbean, who is also the owner of over 22,000 International runs, enthralled a packed hall just like his flashing drives mesmerised a filled stadium.

Credit must be given to the CAB for organising for such a unique show at a time when cricket is in the air like never before.

The following are excerpts

On Sachin’s retirement

Lara: Sachin deserves the respect to decide when he wants to leave the game. He has served Indian cricket, and also world cricket, so well over the years. He has given over 25 years of his life to cricket. A Test match involves around eight days, including the travelling and practice… Now multiply that with 200 (Tests). Then add all the ODIs that he has played… He’s still very fit, though his performance hasn’t been great in the last couple of years. I think this is the right time to walk away from the game.

But sitting here, we can’t understand what effect he had on the young Indian team… You need to go and speak to the guys in the dressing room... For Sachin, don’t just look at the statistics.

I’m sure when he wakes up on the 19th and 20th (after the Wankhede Test), he’s going to think what do... But he’s going to quickly find his feet again… He is a successful man.

Sourav: I’m sure Indian cricket would use his service is some manner... He’s such a great player. It’s a fantastic decision that he has made. It’s also the right send off for such a great man. He deserves this respect. It would not have happened if he had retired in South Africa. He may have got runs, but the adulation that he’s receiving here is something special. Like Lara said, he didn’t have a great last couple of years… But he only got those opportunities because he is Sachin Tendulkar. If I was Sachin, maybe I would have gone a year earlier… But I think he has got the timing right.

On what would be Sachin’s mindset before his last Test, at the Wankhede

Lara: Well, it’s hard to give an opinion. Maybe he needs to think ‘I don’t need to prove anything… It would be wonderful to get a big score in my last match. I should prepare for that.’ He shouldn’t put any undue pressure on himself. It’s very important for him to find what motivates him. If it’s pressure, then let him be under pressure.

He has had the greatest cricketing career... I would tell him to just enjoy the next five days of cricket. (Smiles) You have the ability to score 400 runs, so go and score 400...

Sourav: For me, it doesn’t matter whether he gets a hundred or not in his final Test. He’ll still be one of the best. He’ll always be a champion.

On who could be termed as ‘someone near to Sachin’ in the coming days

Lara: I don’t think we will have someone whom you can say will be close to achieving what Sachin did. In terms of stats, you may have players with better stats… There are boxers who have a better record than Muhammad Ali, but if you mention boxing, you’ve to mention Ali… Similarly in basketball, you have to mention the name of Michael Jordan. So when I speak about cricket, I’ll speak about Sachin.

Sourav: It’s too early to speak on that… Ask me this question 15 months from now, after we have played a few series overseas… Then I will be ready to say. But I do see enormous talent in Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma.

On the popularity of T20 cricket

Lara: I believe the game has evolved… It is a spectator sport… T20 has brought a new generation of spectators to the cricket ground.

Sourav: T20 is here to stay, whatever you say… I am a big fan of T20 cricket and the IPL. When I played my first Ranji Trophy, I was paid Rs 400. But when I look at lot of these first-class players who may not get to play for the country, but get handsomely paid from the IPL, I like it.

On Sourav, the captain

Lara: The discipline, confidence and commitment that you see in the present Indian team was instilled by Sourav the captain.

Sourav: When you are the captain and make decisions, you have to face the consequences. When I sit back and see my days as the captain, when I see where Indian cricket has gone, I don’t worry about it. I’m happy that the Indian cricket has gone forward. As a captain, the biggest detail I focussed on was getting the right players...

You can have team meetings, but only players will win you games. I see that a lot of that in (Mahendra Singh Dhoni). He’s made Rohit Sharma into a player that he is. He would not have got so many opportunities if Dhoni didn’t believe in him. You got to give Dhoni the credit.

On who would be Lara’s top-five batsmen

Lara: It’s difficult… Without thinking too much, they would be Sachin, Viv, Allan Border, Sourav and Ricky Ponting.

On the third day, the CAB organised release of tri-coloured balloons attached to pictures of Tendulkar from across the ground. While rest of the bunch of balloons took off, the one being released by the maestro and his onetime opening partner Ganguly failed to rise.

Both Ganguly and Tendulkar then gave a push to make the balloons go up. The batting greats were then seen sharing a hearty laugh after the balloons finally set sail. Also Dada Honoured Master at the Post match Ceremony !!
