Calcutta :Sonam Kapoor, Sourav Ganguly, Kajol, Waheeda Rehman, Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, Sharmila Tagore and Usha Uthup are humming a common tune — “Dil diyey mon diyey, dil diyey douroben” which is sort of a clarion call for a cause.
It’s the anthem of the Tata Medical Center Kolkata Marathon 2014 that governor M.K. Narayanan will flag off on January 5. The proceeds from the marathon, barring the registration fee, will be spent on treatment of underprivileged children suffering from cancer at Tata Medical Center.
“The whole idea behind Dil Diyey Douroben, the call of the heart, is to wipe a tear off a child’s face,” said Geeta Gopalakrishnan, the director of donor relationships at Tata Medical Center. She penned the lyrics while Uthup composed the music and sang too with a host of others.
Sourav formally announced the marathon at Taj Bengal on Monday. Gopalakrishnan, Dr Mammen Chandy, the director of Tata Medical Center, Prochy Mehta, the organising secretary of the marathon, and Farzan Heerjee, the chief of corporate relations, Tata Steel, were present on the occasion.
“Hopefully we can do enough to raise funds for the medical centre. I’ll make sure that I run and make it a memorable one. We in Calcutta need to make it a success. I am keen to make it a regular affair. May be in the future years, I can participate a bit more. We all have kids… we try to provide the best to them. We don’t realise it till you actually suffer,” Sourav said.
The former Team India captain is not a marathon novice. “I have run when I was young. Let’s see how much I can run this time,” he told Metro. “Seven to 8km… may be 10. Let’s see,” he smiled.
He exhorted Calcuttans to join the cause. “Anybody visiting that place (Tata Medical Center) will feel personally connected. I have actually seen it. A lot of us do a lot of charity without even knowing what’s happening. You should go and see it yourself… you’ll be touched. You’d also run,” he said.
Bhaichung Bhutia, Prosenjit, Rituparna Sengupta and Bickram Ghosh are expected to run alongside Sourav. But what about Sachin Tendulkar with whom Sourav had won many marathons for India on the cricket field? “Sachin will be just a phone call away!”
Now don’t get carried away and expect a Lord’s balcony shirt swirl on a hometown street. “I still have about two months to lose 10 kilos. Maybe then I can do it! I did that in 2002. I was 29 then. Now I am 40,” he laughed.
To run with the stars and for a cause, Red Road on January 5 is where you should be.
