It was a perfect answer to all his critics. Accused of making it into the national team just on the basis of an East zone quota, Sourav Ganguly in his debut Test innings gave back in full measure. There were no signs of rookie nervousness and young Ganguly kept producing one confident stroke after another on the off side. The crowd marvelled at the silky smooth cover drives and India found a new batting star at the Mecca of cricket.
